This course is designed to provide an overview of the challenges and resources required of Professional Patient Advocates when interacting with consumers and their families when navigating the complex healthcare system. The course will sharpen skills and allow you to network with others who are interested in expanding their practice in the emerging area of patient advocacy. . Target Audience: Those who work directly with the consumer in any setting would benefit from this material, including professional patient advocates, nurses, case managers, social workers and others who want to expand their careers into the area of professional patient advocates. Register for the Patient Advocate Certificate Workshop and/or the Care Coordination Summit The Professional Patient Advocate Workshop is a one day course designed to improve your skills and effectiveness as a patient advocate and offers a step towards earning a Certificate in Patient Advocacy.This course is an introduction to advocacy with a focus on both private advocates as well as those employed by a hospital or in a private practice. This course can be taken as part of the series of requirements to earn a Certificate or as a stand-alone educational opportunity. The certificate program is a comprehensive education process aimed to enhance the training of those in this specialized field, and it serves as a point of entry to professionals who want to transition to this new role, providing a course of study that builds on an existing body of knowledge.
The course addresses these basic health consumer needs: 1. What really matters in healthcare to consumers? Feel good, pay only appropriate costs, get help with available resources, understand options, trust a health care advisor 2. Afford each patient with access to a professional dedicated to his/her best health interests 3. Eliminate the need for the patient or family members to navigate a complex healthcare system alone 4. Promote health care based on a competent trusted advisor relationship 5. Understand basic state federal and private healthcare programs 6. Assist patients to access basic Behavioral and Medical Health Services through insurance benefits and state programs 7. As the practice emerges, patient advocates exist throughout the continuum of care to meet the needs of consumers regardless of their entry point into the healthcare system. | | 10:00 - 10:15am | Networking Break | | 10:15 - 11:00am | Session 3: Trends and Opportunities for Patient Advocacy Session Three takes a deep dive into the trends and opportunities that are available to patient advocates. As the healthcare system transitions to a patient- and family-centered system where the individual consumer is engaged in his or her care as an active participant, patient advocates will fill the role of assisting patients and their families in navigating the complex healthcare system in health promotion as well as chronic disease management. | | 11:00 -11:45am | Session 4: Core Components of Patient Advocacy This session provides an overview of the core components of patient advocacy that puts structure to the process so that consumers, employers and other stakeholders understand what to expect from patient advocates when services are needed. | | 11:45 - 12:15pm | Session 5: Patient and Family Support In this session we shift focus to the patient's point of view and review the importance of patient and family support when someone is ill, injured or wants to change behaviors that impact their health and healthcare. The session reviews the role of advocates in assisting consumers and their families as they transition through the diverse healthcare system. | | 12:15-1:00pm | Networking Lunch | | 1:00 - 1:45pm | Session 6: Reimbursement Systems Session Six reviews reimbursement systems that provide consumers with access to healthcare resources. The session shares insights into the major systems and the unique processes that are specific to each. | | 1:45 - 2:30pm | Session 7: Payer and Provider Options In this session we look at the wealth of resources the industry provides to patients in order to meet their individual needs. In addition, we review the rules that govern the payer and the provider so advocates have a clear understanding of the rules and regulations associated with ensuring that clients receive the maximum benefit. | | 2:30 - 3:15pm | Session 8: Legal and Risk Management Issues As patient advocacy involves working with patients, understanding the legal and risk management issues is essential from a personal perspective as well as from a consumer perspective. In this session we will review issues that impact advocates and consumers. | | 3:15 - 3:30pm | Networking Break | | 3:30 - 4:30pm | Session 9: Business Issues for Patient Advocates In this session we will cover Business issues Patient Advocates need to know as they move forward in private practice via Round Table Discussions. Topics include: Writing a Business Plan, Setting Rates, Documentation/Regulatory issues, Marketing/Advertising and Networking must do's to build your business. | | 4:30 - 5:15pm | Session 10: Ethical Issues Session Ten looks at the ethical issues and challenges facing advocates as the result of escalating costs, decreasing resources and increased consumer demands. The session will provide information advocates can use as they perform duties to inform, educate and empower consumers to have an active role in their health and healthcare. |
